It\u2019s been pretty full on lately. We\u2019ve celebrated the Aussie spirit on our national day of remembrance, we\u2019re excitedly on royal baby watch and we\u2019ve been shocked by the earthquake in Nepal.<\/p>\n
And sometimes life seems like there is so much going on, that everything is swirling around us like a fast moving stream, and we, we\u2019re just a bit overwhelmed, and so, we, go with the flow.\u00a0\u00a0 We nod sympathetically half-listening to our friends, we cook on auto pilot for our family, we don\u2019t even really remember the drive home from work, but we got here somehow!\u00a0\u00a0 Ever feel like that?\u00a0\u00a0 That you\u2019re just going with the flow?\u00a0\u00a0 Sort of just, existing?\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019ve been there.\u00a0\u00a0 We all have days like that.\u00a0\u00a0 But weeks?\u00a0\u00a0 If you have weeks on end of going with the flow, maybe you need a lightning bolt.<\/p>\n
My lightning bolt came in the way of a \u2018lightbulb\u2019 moment a couple of years back.\u00a0\u00a0 One day I had a stirring thought just pop into my head.\u00a0\u00a0 Unprovoked.\u00a0\u00a0 Well, at least consciously unprovoked.\u00a0\u00a0 And it was this\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cAs human beings we have the ability to change our minds whenever we want to.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rather profound, no?!\u00a0\u00a0 Well, it wasn\u2019t intended to be, I can assure you.\u00a0\u00a0 It was probably more of a self-pacifying mantra at the time.\u00a0\u00a0 But it manifested.\u00a0\u00a0 And it became a liberating thought.<\/p>\n
Not so much in the way that I exercised that feeling I\u2019m sure we\u2019ve all had before, and acted on a whim \u2014 spontaneously throwing my car keys off a bridge, or diving right into that pile of autumn leaves (!), but, in the same vein of action.\u00a0\u00a0 Of movement.\u00a0\u00a0 Of will.<\/p>\n
One day.\u00a0\u00a0 We are born in one day.\u00a0\u00a0 We die in one day.\u00a0\u00a0 So much can happen in one day.\u00a0\u00a0 We can change in one day.\u00a0\u00a0 And our future can change in one day.\u00a0\u00a0 It might be sobering, but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re not stuck.\u00a0\u00a0 Regardless of our circumstances there is always something that we could do differently to improve our situations if we made up our minds to do so.\u00a0\u00a0 Write that CV.\u00a0\u00a0 Quit your job!\u00a0\u00a0 Make the move.\u00a0\u00a0 Stick up for yourself.\u00a0\u00a0 Start that business.\u00a0\u00a0 Speak up about that promotion, or apply for that dream role.<\/p>\n
The Dalai Lama believes that happiness begins in our minds, and I\u2019m inclined to agree.\u00a0\u00a0 Ever heard the saying \u2018you are about as happy as you make up your mind to be\u2019?<\/p>\n
Well, what would happen if you kick-started a new story for yourself that started with \u2018One day I\u2026\u2019?\u00a0\u00a0 Hypothesize the possibilities if the leap is too much for today.<\/p>\n
